Arthrosis is one of the most frequent disorders of joints and one of the most discussed health problems of present day. It affects up to 12% of the population.
What is arthrosis?
Arthrosis is a long-lasting and slowly developing disorder of one or more joints when the joint cartilage wears out. It mostly affects knees and hip joints, which are the most exposed joints to load. Arthrosis starts with the decline of the joint cartilage and proceeds with changes in the adjacent bones and damaging of the joint. This leads to joint stiffness and pain as well as growing deformation. The first changes start to occur at the age of 20-30 and grow with age.
Why does arthrosis occur?
It´s difficult to set the starting cause of many diseases, in other cases there is some situation or factor explaining the occurrence of the disease. Arthrosis is caused by various factors but mostly due to an overload of the joints. This disease mostly affects overweight or hard-working people. We can also find many sportsmen among the patients. The initial cause for the development of the disease frequently is because of an injury.
Symptoms of arthrosis
The typical symptoms of arthrosis are pain and joint stiffness. Symptoms can be triggered by cold e.g. by weather changes. Pain also occurs during a demanding activity, e.g. going upstairs and downstairs, down the hill or on a rough terrain. The problems don't have to occur by other activities (cycling). Then we speak about so called starting pain. Later it comes to joint stiffness when starting a movement, fading away with the activity. As the disease deteriorates, pain remains also by the movement itself and at rest as well. The most frequent disorder is gonarthrosis – disease of knee joints. This disorder also affects more women than men, especially middle-aged and older ones. It occurs in overweight people, as well as in those who went through a knee-joint injury or after operation in the knee area
Arthrosis is a disease causing many problems and nowadays becoming more frequent. It affects more women than men and causes annoying pain. Therefore it´s important not only to treat arthrosis itself, but also the pain so that the patient can get back to his normal life.
